Curriculum

There are five core subjects, English, Mathematics, Science, Information and Communication Technology and Religious Education. In order to give children a broad, balanced education we also teach the foundation subjects of Design and Technology, Geography, History, Music, Art and P.E.

English

The acquisition of written and spoken language underpins all aspects of the curriculum. We build upon children’s early experiences to ensure progression in the acquisition of skills in speaking/listening, reading/writing as outlined in the Early Years and National Curriculum programs of study. We aim to relate the skills that the children learn to their own experiences so that their learning is rooted in a context that is meaningful.

Mathematics

Through the daily maths lessons we aim to equip children with the necessary skills and understanding in number, algebra, measure, shape, space and data handling, to enable them to tackle practical tasks in real life problems. Lessons include whole class mental calculating, group work and a discussion to conclude the lesson and review the concepts learned. Oral skills and mental calculations are emphasised. Formal methods of recording are introduced gradually. By the time the children leave Christ Church School they will have received a good foundation in mathematics, will be familiar with and able to use the four rules of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.

Science

The children are made aware of the role and importance of Science in everyday life. Children learn through first hand experience and observations using a variety of environmental contexts as starting points. These activities foster certain skills, such as prediction, hypothesising, questioning and interpreting. Our beautiful grounds, which include a landscaped pond area, a small woodland, bird hide and a Millennium Garden, provide a rich source of learning and range of experiences.

Information and Communication Technology

Information and Communication Technology is the technology associated with the handling of information, its storage, processing and transmission in a variety of forms by electronic means, and its use in controlling the operation of machines and other devices. Each class has an interactive whiteboard, computers with internet access, access to digital cameras and a scanner. Information and Communication Technology plays an important par t in our curriculum and it is used to enhance the learning experiences in all subjects. Children are taught how to save and retrieve material and information, to use a word processor as well as accessing the network.

Religious Education

The religious life of the school is central to our ethos. Religious Education is taught throughout the school in line with the Diocesan Guidelines. It includes teaching on the festivals of Christmas and Easter, the nature of God, the stories and friends of Jesus, the Bible, the purpose of the Church and an introduction to Judaism. We also teach the children to respect other faiths. R.E. provides a framework for pupils to develop their own beliefs, values and sense of worth. We promote a sense of responsibility for God’s world and all who live within.
